We have become,
for better or worse,
a visually oriented
society. Because
literature is
no longer the
dominant form of
expression, script
writers, directors,
and actors do more to shape the
culture which we
live in than do the
giants of literature

- Todd Kappelman
Assistant Director of
the Trinity Institute

faith n. 1. reliance or trust in a person or thing. 2. belief in a religious doctrine. 3. a system of religious belief, the Christian faith. 4. a promise, loyalty, since.ity.

Expressions of faith can be readily found in the arts. Music, paintings, frescos and sculptures have, through the centuries, provided numerous examples of faith as seen by the artist. Film is another more contemporary medium in which faith can be expressed. The more obvious examples of faith & film can be seen in such well-known films as The Ten Commandments, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Sound of Music, and Chariots of Fire.

But faith & film can also be found in more subtle ways in the lives of “everyday” people. The series of six films selected for the Faith & Film Festival have been chosen with several objectives: to entertain, to stimulate thought, and to encourage an exchange of ideas on what it means to be a Christian – an exchange of ideas on faith in a non-liturgical setting.

The Pool
(2007) dir. Chris Smith (98 min)

A boy working in a hotel becomes obsessed with a swimming pool within an opulent estate in Panjim, Goa in India. His world changes as he meets the family living in the estate – a successful father and rebellious daughter. Slowly he gains their trust to edge closer to his fascination – but ends up with so much more. This winning film from the Sundance Film Festival will leave you refreshed by the generosity and potential of the human spirit.
