Dr. Sarah M. McKinnon Wednesday, March 28, 2007 • 7:00 - 9:00 pm This illustrated lecture will focus on the changing representations of the Last Supper in the art history of Western Europe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
By examining examples of panel painting, sculpture, fresco, and manuscript illumination from both north and south of the Alps, we will observe the varied aspects of the event that artists chose depict, both physically and psychologically, reflecting their different understandings of the significance of the story. We will also consider the ways in which artists used for their visual sources not only holy scriptures but legends, notions of popular piety, and contemporary attitudes.
