PromiseLand Takes Action!

PROMISELAND BAKES FOR THE YONGE STREET MISSION
Yonge Street MissionThe kids of PromiseLand took action together this Advent for the Yonge Street Mission. They baked, wrapped and sold dozens and dozens of treats at our annual Christmas Fair. We had tons of fun and raised a total of $257 for the Yonge Street Mission! After learning about their programmes from our guest speaker Wendy Robbins, we know that our contribution will help give people in need a place to eat, play and learn. FOOD DRIVE GOAL SURPASSED!
Thank you to everyone who has generously contributed to our Annual Dried and Canned Food Drive for the Churches-on-the-Hill Food Bank. With the help of the congregation, WE SURPASSED OUR GOAL and collected over 400 ITEMS! Together we provided much needed food to people in our community.

PROMISELAND MAKES SANDWICHES FOR THE HOMELESS
This Thanksgiving, the kids of PromiseLands talked about thankfulness and the importance of sharing our blessings. Then, we took action and helped feed the hungry in our community! We worked together to make 20 bag lunches complete with a turkey or PB & J sandwich, fruit and a juice box and dropped them off at the Scott Mission after the service. The Scott Mission is a downtown Christian Mission that provides shelter and food for those in need.

PROMISELAND CELEBRATES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY - June 5th 2011
CCDP's kids and teens commemorated World Environment Day by enjoying an entirely VEGAN breakfast. We made the food together, and then everyone sampled the delicious AND environmentally conscious breakfast. We also discussed different food choices (local, vegan, vegetarian), and why eating animal products as much as we do here in North America is problematic for the world.

PROMISELAND BAKES FOR HARVEST FOR THE HUNGRY!
The kids of PromiseLand mixed, stirred, kneaded and baked all morning on April 16th in preparation for their bake sale fundraiser on Palm Sunday. Dozens and dozens of delicious baked goods were made, everything from buttertarts to cupcakes to classic chocolate chip cookies.

The bake sale was an enormous hit, and absolutely everything was sold (quite quickly too!!). The kids raised a total of $356.92, every penny of which will be donated to Harvest for the Hungry! Harvest for the Hungry provides locally sourced food boxes for families living in poverty in Eastern Europe, www.eurovangelism.org

Promiseland - Gift Bags for NelliesPROMISELAND CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMAN'S DAY!
The families of PromiseLand celebrated International Woman's Day, March 8th 2011, by creating 11 gift bags for the women and children of Nellie's Women's Shelter. Nellie's offers emergency housing and support for women suffering from violence, abuse and homelessness. These gift bags included toiletries, clothing, books and gift cards, all generously donated by the families of PromiseLand.

World Malaria EVERY 45 SECONDS A CHILD DIES OF MALARIA
We, the kids of PromiseLand, are very concerned about the spread of malaria. We know its spread is significantly decreased with the use of a bednet, and a bednet only costs $10. Learn more here » By 16 May 2010, CCDP collected donations for 145 bednets!

PromiseLand Gives Hope to our Canadian Soldiers in Afghanistan!
On November 7th 2010, Lieutenant Colonel Sylvain Maurais joined us in PromiseLand. He shared stories and experiences of being a Military Chaplain in Afghanistan and asked the children to create symbols of hope to send to our soldiers. The letters and poster we created were carefully packed up and have sent to our troops. We give thanks for all their efforts and sacrifices and pray for peace and justice in our world. Our Annual Christmas Pageant is a highlight of the Holiday Season
There are roles for anyone who wants to participate, from sparkly angels to regal Magi!

Lent & Holy Week in PromiseLand.
We have a delicious Pancake Supper to kick-off the Lenten season, followed by a meaningful family service and imposition of ashes. On Good Friday, we have an interactive service remembering Jesus’ walk to Jerusalem and then break bread together.

Starting Lenten Journals40 Acts of Kindness: A Lenten Project
This Lent, the children of PromiseLand embarked on a journey of kindness. For the 40 days leading up to Easter, they engaged in 40 intentional acts of love, everything from shoveling snow, to helping friends with school work, to smiling at the new kid in school.

As a group we also did two larger initiatives, gift bags for Nellie's Women's Shelter and a bake sale Fundraiser for Harvest for the Hungry. Reflecting on the meaning of this project on April 10th, Trish commented on how amazing it was that even the smallest acts on our part can really brighten someone's day. Claire said that even when the project was officially over, she would continue to try and do such acts because she had seen how much of a positive impact it could have on people's day to day lives.

Holy Week & Easter 2011
Thank you to everyone who contributed their energy, time and talents to making this Holy Week and Easter so meaningful! The kids of PromiseLand started the week off by waving palms and playing instruments for Palm Sunday. On Maundy Thursday, we learned about Jesus' last night and how he washed his disciplines feet (we even did our own foot washing!) The following morning we gathered again to walk the 15 Stations of the Cross and break bread together. On Saturday night, we celebrated Easter Vigil and the confirmation of many of our classmates! And finally, early on Easter morning, we gathered outside, among the Easter flowers, to rejoice and proclaim the risen Christ!! What an incredible couple of days!
