ANGLICAN SOCIAL JUSTICE LINKS
OUTREACH "If an elephant is standing on the tail of a mouse and you say you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality." - Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu in relation to what Nelson Mandela did to fight for justice and what any individual can do in the face of injustice (from Waging Peace in our Schools, Lantieri, L. and Patti, J. Beacon Press, Boston, 1996) link » |
Social Justice
Concerns about social justice are acknowledged in the baptismal vows: "Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself?" ..."Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?" (- Book of Alternative Services, p 159)
These prayer book passages reference scripture's overwhelmingly frequent bidding, urging - and command - that we concern ourselves with the care for and the well-being of others, as well as of the world. As well as nurturing individual responses, churches co-operate as communities of concern - a preliminary selection of social justice websites related to the Christian perspective are listed on the left. Announcements about upcoming events will be posted here from time to time. "If you see an injustice being committed, you aren't an observer, you are a participant. And you have an obligation to do something." - June Callwood, March 2007 |

SUPPORTIVE &
AFFORDABLE HOUSING |
Last October Michael Bryant was visited by Peter Holmes, chair of the Churches on-the-Hill [link] clergy group; Paul McGrath, chair of the COTH Food Bank; and, Baruch Frydman-Kohl, Rabbi at Beth Tzedec Synagogue. This meeting was a follow up of a meeting the year before by representatives of the four Anglican parishes in St. Paul’s riding who made Mr. Bryant aware of the concern that Anglicans in his riding had about the lack of affordable and supportive housing.
Mr. Bryant emphasized at both meetings the importance of individuals communicating their concerns for priorities to their elected officials. To respond to his reply the Diocesan Housing Sub-Committee is circulating a petition (non-partisan) that will be presented to the elected officials requesting that funds for affordable and supportive housing be a priority consideration in the 2007 budget. A copy of the petition is at both the Tower Door and the Yonge Street entrance. I invite you to sign the petition to voice your support. There will be a copy available in the Atrium during the week. Also available is a copy of a background document from the Housing Group. - Judith Kidd Visit the Diocese of Toronto Social Justice Concerns website here ». | ||
